West African giants Senegal changed the script and became the first African country to win a game at the ongoing World Cup in Russia.
Prior to the Tuesday game, all African teams had lost their opening group games but this was not the case with the Lions of Teranga who defied the odds to beat Poland by two goals to one in their group H opening game at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow.
The African representatives took the lead on the 37th minute mark when a shot from Everton's Idrissa Gueye was deflected by Thiago Cionek to beat former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny for an own goal.
In the 60th minute, M'Baye Niang grabbed the second for Senegal when sprinted back on to the field of play after injury and intercepted a back pass from midfield, the Polish goalkeeper and defender for a goal into an empty that was highly contested by the Polish players. But they ensured a frantic finale
Poland however died trying when Grzegorz Krychowiak headed home a free-kick at the far post in the 86th minute for his team to grab a consolation goal.
Earlier in another game in the group, Japan had beaten 10 man Colombia by two goals to one.
Japan is top of Group H with Senegal in second position after one game.
